I confess. I never aspired to become an author. Well-intentioned family members encouraged me to write a book following the occasional, eccentric comment, but I never took them seriously.

Then in the fall of 2011, my best friend, whose sympathetic ear had tired of listening to me drone on about my husband and children, asked, "Why don't you write it down? Make it into something different, something better? Write your fantasy." And in my contrary mind, an idea took hold. What if instead of making it better, I made it worse? Much, much worse? A Thousand Tiny Cracks, my first novel, is the result of that conversation.

"Reality continues to ruin my life," a quote from Calvin and Hobbes, has always been my sarcastic response when confronted by agitating optimists. But now my reality has expanded beyond my wildest expectations, and it is time to search for a new mantra.
